We love Christmas at our home. This year is definitely different from the years before. Our very active baby boy will be 9 months pushing 10 by Christmas Day. How we typically decorate will have to be modified for safety and less exhaustion for me! My biggest concern is keeping our baby from messing with and potentially pulling down the Christmas tree. So here are 3 ideas on how to keep babies away from Christmas trees.

Tree gates
Christmas tree gates are a popular way to keep babies away from Christmas trees. I’ve seen many of these and you can always use them after the holidays. You can repurpose tree gates as playpens or use them to protect your baby from other dangerous items. Or vice versa, you could use a playpen – like this one – around or next to your tree. On the other hand, you could go full jolly mode and get a Christmas-themed gate to make your barrier a holiday hit.
Gift wall
Not my first option but I have seen friends build walls with their gift boxes. My son would probably just destroy the wrapping. If your kiddo isn’t as curious, maybe just maneuvering your gifts into a fortress would actually deter them.
Felt tree
This is the tactic I’m using on my 9-month-old. Now when he is intrigued by our big family Christmas tree we divert his attention to his very own felt Christmas tree. He does with it as he pleases. At 9 months old, he can still be easily distracted but I hope to instill in him that the big Christmas tree is not to be messed with. I’ve also purchased this wall tree and snowman for him to play with as well.
So if your little one is beginning to be extra curious about your Christmas tree try one of these ideas to protect your tree and distract your kiddo.
If these don’t keep baby away from your Christmas tree try to baby-proof your tree with these ideas:
- Bells on the tree as an alarm
- plastic or felt ornaments
- remove sharp metal hooks
I know how a busy little body can keep you on your toes. For this reason, I hope one of these ideas will help you keep babies away from your Christmas tree.
