10 Best Books for Babies Approved by an 8-Month-Old

Since I wrote a post on why you should read to your baby, I thought I’d follow up with my list of best books for babies! This list is compiled of books I read to my son regularly and he actually really likes. It is a mixture of books for story-telling and learning. This is a short and sweet list your little one will be sure to love!

Some affiliate links in this post may pay me, but it does not lessen my honest opinions. All statements about said items are true to my fullest sentiment.

My list of best books for babies we currently read on repeat:

Also a childhood favorite of mine, Brown Bear, Brown Bear brings a smile to my son’s face every time! Even when he was about 4 months old he would smile at the illustration of the teacher. I love this book for babies because it has simple pictures that help them learn animals and colors.

Goodnight, Texas

This made my best books for babies list because this is my 8-month-old’s favorite book hands down. I’m not sure why but he used to grin so big once we got to the umbrellas at the river walk and the pink sky on the page with the Austin bat bridge. I can not wait to take him to all the places in Texas that this book mentions. I love his enthusiasm during this book. And because it is a “goodnight” theme this is a great book to read before bed. Here is a link to the full Goodnight Our World series if you are looking for a different destination.

Follow up: he is loving this series and often brings me Goodnight, Texas and Goodnight, Campsite at the same time.

The Eye Book

I’m highly fond of Dr. Suess. Rhymes for children have been shown to be helpful and effective in learning. This book accentuates the character’s eyes. It also depicts real things “a girl, a man…. and an old tin can”, unlike other Dr. Seuss books but also while still rhyming – which I love. This book is a fun way to learn about eyes and what they do.

Greg Paprocki Books

I want all the Paprocki books. They are beautiful! Greg Paprocki’s illustrations are fun and antique-y looking. He does many different themed alphabets and countdowns. Here is a link to His collection of books online: CLICK ME.

B is for Boo was our first Paprocki book. It is loved by all. We have since collected other holidays to help our little guy understand what’s happening during the current seasons.

Stay, Benson!

This book is for older kids, however, I randomly picked this out from our local library and our son loved this book. The story is about a pet dog, and my little boy’s favorite things are his two pet dogs. The book has brightly colored pages and simple words; words that rhyme and repeat. The cutout pages were even fun for me. I had to renew this book multiple times and I can still quote it.

Taco Tuesday

First of all, the book is called Taco Tuesday! This should be enough convincing. I would literally bust this book out very enthusiastically on Tuesdays – then Dad would have to remind me it was, in fact, not a Tuesday.

However, this is an adorable finger puppet book. My baby would giggle and try to grab the taco and eat (bite) it. A very fun mix-up to the regular storytime.

LMNO Peas

I can’t tell if it’s because I love this book so much – that makes him love it, but whatever it is he really likes this book. This book will be a favorite for a while if I can help it. It’s the most adorable way to get through the alphabet. Introducing many words, while – you got it! – rhyming! To top it all off, it’s peas. The sweetest little peas ( or unique peas I should say) describe “who they are” in alphabetic order. My son just sits and listens to the whole book in awe.

Pop-Up Peek-a-boo Farm

Who doesn’t love a pop-up? Honestly, this is the only one we have, but he laughed hysterically the first few times we read the book. He still smiles and loves to see who is behind each item months later. I bet any pop-up would have the same effect on any kid, but the giggles from this particular book were well enjoyed!

Quack! Moo! Oink!: Listen to Animals Around the Farm

This was the first sound book. The Donkey is hilarious. He would push the donkey over and over shocked that there was something that made this silly noise. With many animals, the fun goes on and on. We have since gotten more sound books and this one is still a favorite because there are more animals like the donkey and owl that aren’t typically on other sound books.

If I Were a Sloth

There is an entire series of animals, but this sloth book really caught my husband’s eye. It took a little time but now he loves to touch and feel the textures of the book. His favorite is the sloth’s nose. He keeps touching it on each page expecting the silky nose to be on each page.

Being a huge advocate for reading to children I had to gather this small list of my son’s favorite books for babies. These are his fondest books that we read over and over. If you have your own set of favorites – baby-approved – leave them in the comments below.
